Lawn bowls is suitable for all age groups and both genders. Even those with a level of disability can play. It is a family game where lifelong friendships are formed. It is also a competitive sport. Players can win provincial and national honors, and test themselves in national and district (provincial) events and league play in various divisions. Bowls is one of the most affordable of sports. The cost of new bowls has risen, but a strong market in used bowls keeps the entry level affordable.
The basis of the sport is the individual club. The bowls section at RCC is in place to provide good fellowship as well as a good standard of competitive bowls. The basis of RCC bowls is mixed social bowls (tabs in) where you meet your fellow bowlers while improving your standard of play in a spirit of good fellowship.
Bowls is played at RCC most weekends and public holidays. There is a brief closed season (usually in the Spring).
Unlike most sports, bowls coaching for new bowlers is FREE! Simply ask for the club coach or a qualified assistant.
He (or she) will arrange a convenient time for a comprehensive coaching session with an introduction to basic techniques and instruction in the nationally endorsed Clinic Style. A coach will also show you basic practice techniques, enabling you to develop your own game. After one (perhaps two) coaching sessions, you will be able to play your first game. It is easy to arrange follow-up coaching sessions to address issues that arise in play.
A coach also gives a brief overview of the rules of bowls and points of ‘etiquette’ that ensure enjoyment for all. A coach is a good source of advice if you are about to buy bowls and other equipment.
Flat-soled shoes without a pattern are essential. Ask club colleagues for further information on attire. In yesteryear, a restrictive dress code was applied in SA bowls. Today, the emphasis is on commonsense guidelines and a preference for club colors to build pride in your club.
